Gmail Integrates Sustainability Fun Facts

In recent months, Google has gradually integrated a few “Easter egg” style fun facts into their online email offering, Gmail, which speak to sustainability and recycling. In the image below, you can see one about recycling paper that states: “Recycling a 3-foot-high stack of newspapers can save one whole tree.”

These messages show up where advertisements might normally be placed, i.e. at the top of the page near the actions toolbar. What a great way to draw attention to ad space (which generates revenue) while also sharing some positive and actionable information. I definitely smiled at the cleverness of this particular fun fact, because I saw it while I was cleaning out spam and there it was, reminding me to recycle in reality as I was using my virtual trash bin. Nice one, Google ;)

Did you know that it takes an entire tree to generate the equivalent of a stack of newspapers? I didn’t, but it makes sense, given all the processing and refining that goes into producing crisp white sheets.

Here are some tips to help you master Gmail so you can rely less and less on paper! Become a Gmail Ninja… whhhaaaa!!1
